Sturgeon Moon Train
Organized by Mroovki
The August Sturgeon Moon represents far more than an astronomical phenomenon—it embodies the profound relationship between indigenous peoples and their environment. The name originated from Algonquian tribes' observations of lake sturgeon abundance during August full moons in the Great Lakes region, where these massive fish were easily caught and formed a crucial part of seasonal subsistence cycles. Today, as sturgeon populations have declined to critically endangered levels, many Native communities work to revive both traditional cultural practices and conservation efforts. The Sturgeon Moon thus serves as both a reminder of abundance lost and a symbol of hope for restoration—connecting ancient wisdom with contemporary environmental stewardship in the ongoing relationship between human cultures and the natural world.
